Topological and phenomenological classification of bursting oscillations   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
We describe a classification scheme for bursting oscillations which encompasses many of those found in the literature on bursting in excitable media. This is an extension of the scheme of Rinzel (inMathematical Topics in Population Biology, Springer, Berlin, 1987), put in the context of a sequence of horizontal cuts through a two-parameter bifurcation diagram. We use this to describe the phenomenological character of different types of bursting, addressing the issue of how well the bursting can be characterized given the limited amount of information often available in experimental settings.  相似文献

Despite advances in statistical techniques for investigating population dynamics based on mark–recapture data, the majority of our understanding about demography and regulation comes from relatively few taxa. Most proposed generalisations about the association between demography and variation in population size are based on data from vertebrates, there are few sufficiently detailed invertebrate studies to examine whether these generalisations are widely supported. The population biology of freshwater invertebrates is especially poorly known. We present a large-scale mark–recapture study of an endemic freshwater crayfish from Madagascar ( Astacoides granulimanus ). Variation in density, caused by difference in fishing pressure due to local taboos, allowed us to investigate density-dependent regulation. We found evidence of density dependence in fecundity operating through the proportion of reproductive females by size but no significant evidence of density dependence in growth. Using a prospective analysis based on the elasticities from a size-structured matrix model, we found that both recruitment rates and survival rates of large individuals were strongly associated with deterministic population growth – a result that differs from generalisations drawn from vertebrate studies. A central assumption in mark–recapture studies is that handling does not affect mortality. By treating the number of times an individual was captured as an individual covariate, easily done using the freeware program MARK, we were able to test for, and take account of, handling-induced mortality. Our results show interesting similarities, and important differences, to generalisations based on vertebrate studies and emphasise the importance of population studies on poorly known taxa.  相似文献

A common observation for seasonally breeding vertebrates is that the reproductive processes of gamete production, sex steroid hormone secretion, and mating behavior coincide, and further, that sex steroid hormones activate mating behavior. The postulate of hormone-dependence of mating behavior is based primarily on detailed studies of laboratory and domesticated species. However, comparison of a wide array of vertebrates reveals numerous exceptions to this supposed rule. Consideration of these species indicates that there is no fixed or intrinsic causal association among gamete production, sex hormone secretion, and mating behavior within any of the classes of vertebrates.  相似文献

1. The red-sided garter snake hibernates for about six months each year in Manitoba, Canada, where winter temperatures are often as low as -40 degrees C. Mammalian hibernators typically undergo profound changes in preparation for hibernation, but little is known about corresponding changes in reptiles. 2. We tested the importance of seasonal changes in the ability of red-sided garter snakes to hibernate successfully by exposing them to winter conditions at different times of year. 3. Animals that began hibernation in the fall were more likely to survive hibernation than animals that began hibernation in either early or late summer, despite the fact that the animals were kept on seasonally constant conditions prior to hibernation. 4. We suggest that these changes are derived from endogenous components of the yearly hibernation cycle of red-sided garter snakes but that only part of the cycle proceeds endogenously, i.e. it is not a completely endogenous circannual cycle.  相似文献

We find support for the hypothesis that changes in the monthly odds of a twin among live-born males predict subsequent and opposite changes in the odds of a twin among live-born females. The hypothesis arises from the long standing argument that natural selection has conserved mechanisms by which pregnant women in stressed populations spontaneously abort fetuses least likely to yield grandchildren. Previous attempts to empirically test this argument focus almost entirely on males. We contribute to the literature by showing that, consistent with the logic of natural selection, maternal adaptations to environmental changes likely have effects on the survival of both male and female conceptuses and fetuses.  相似文献

Uniconazole-induced thermotolerance in soybean seedling root tissue   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr. cv. A2] seeds were germinated in 0 or 1 mg 11 (3.4 uM) uniconazole, after which seedling roots were excised and exposed to 22 or 48°C for 90 min. Prior to the temperature treatments there were few ultrastructural differences between uniconazole-treated seedling roots and the controls. Following exposure to 48°C, electron micrographs revealed near complete loss of normal ultrastructure in control epidermal root cells, whereas cellular integrity was maintained in treated roots, indicating that uniconazole conferred tolerance to high temperature. Total electrolyte, sugar and K+ leakage were all greater from control roots than treated roots during exposure to 48°C. Proline content in the roots was unaffected by uniconazole at 22°C but was 25–30% greater in treated tissue than in controls following exposure to 48°C. Malondialdehyde content was unaffected by uniconazole at 22°C but was nearly 20% less in treated tissue than in controls following high temperature exposure. This indicates that uniconazole decreased high-temperature-induced lipid peroxidation. Uniconazole elevated several antiox-idant systems in the roots, including water-soluble sulfhydryl concentration and catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that uniconazole-induced stress tolerance is due, at least in part, to enhanced antioxidant activity which reduces stress-related oxidative damage to cell membranes.  相似文献

Of the approximately 1.5 million species described to date, about 48 170 (3.2%) are vertebrates. Of these 24 618 (51%) are fishes. Amazingly, 41% of fishes are found in fresh water which makes up a negligible percentage of the water on earth. The sea accounts for 97% of all water on the planet and contains 58% of the fish species, mostly from shallow, warm-coastal areas. The families Cichlidae, Cyprinidae, Characidae, Loricariidae, and Cyprinodontidae constitute about half of all the recently described new freshwater fish species named in the period 1978–1993. The Gobiidae and Serranidae are the marine families with the largest number of recently described new species. The most new freshwater teleost names came from South America (39%), Africa (32%) and Asia (17%). New fish species continue to be described at the rate of roughly 130–160 each year. An estimated 13 775 new fish names have been proposed in this century, representing about 56% of all currently known fish species. Three species are discussed in detail to represent remarkable examples of 20th century fish discoveries: the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae, the salamanderfish Lepidogalaxias salamandroides of Western Australia, and the megamouth shark Megachasma pelagios. Lung carcinoma development is accompanied by field changes that may have diagnostic significance. We have previously shown the importance of chromosomal aneusomy in lung cancer progression. Here, we tested whether genomic gains in six specific loci, TP63 on 3q28, EGFR on 7p12, MYC on 8q24, 5p15.2, and centromeric regions for chromosomes 3 (CEP3) and 6 (CEP6), may provide further value in the prediction of lung cancer. Bronchial biopsy specimens were obtained by LIFE bronchoscopy from 70 subjects (27 with prevalent lung cancers and 43 individuals without lung cancer). Twenty six biopsies were read as moderate dysplasia, 21 as severe dysplasia and 23 as carcinoma in situ (CIS). Four-micron paraffin sections were submitted to a 4-target FISH assay (LAVysion, Abbott Molecular) and reprobed for TP63 and CEP 3 sequences. Spot counts were obtained in 30–50 nuclei per specimen for each probe. Increased gene copy number in 4 of the 6 probes was associated with increased risk of being diagnosed with lung cancer both in unadjusted analyses (odds ratio = 11, p<0.05) and adjusted for histology grade (odds ratio = 17, p<0.05). The most informative 4 probes were TP63, MYC, CEP3 and CEP6. The combination of these 4 probes offered a sensitivity of 82% for lung cancer and a specificity of 58%. These results indicate that specific cytogenetic alterations present in preinvasive lung lesions are closely associated with the diagnosis of lung cancer and may therefore have value in assessing lung cancer risk.  相似文献
